Israeli man's counsel keeps mum on being hired to defend accused over firearm charges

KUALA LUMPUR: The counsel representing Israeli national Shalom Avitan has declined to reveal how they came about defending the 38-year-old against the two firearm charges.

Counsel Navinjit Singh declined to comment when asked who had contacted him to stand for the suspected Israeli spy who claimed trial to the charges before Sessions Court judge Tasnim Abu Bakar today.

The proceedings, which was slated to begin at 9am, was delayed to 10.30am, pending the arrival of Avitan's counsels.

More than 20 members of the press had gathered at the court complex at 7am ahead of the proceedings.

Avitan was represented by Navinjit and co-counsel, Jeffrey Ooi, while the prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Mustafa P. Kunyalam.

Earlier today, Avitan pleaded not guilty to charges of possession of bullets and trafficking of six firearms.
