Four-cornered fight in Kuala Kubu Baharu [NSTTV]

HULU SELANGOR: The Kuala Kubu Baharu state seat by-election will see a four-corner fight between Pakatan Harapan (PH), Perikatan Nasional (PN) and two more candidates.

Election Commission (EC) returning officer Yuhanas Auree Kamaruddin announced that the state seat would be contested by PN's Khairul Azhari Saut, PH's Pang Sock Tao, Hafizah Zainudin of Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) and Nyau Ke Xin, who is contesting as an independent.

Yuhanas said no nomination forms for the four candidates were rejected when the nomination for the by-election concluded at 10am.

Meanwhile, Yuhanas when after the announcement of candidates for the by-election, said an independent candidate Chng Boon Lai withdrew from the nomination application.

No detail, however, was provided on Chng's withdrawal.

The by-election, which will be held on May 11, was triggered by the passing of three-term Kuala Kubu Baharu assemblyman Lee Kiong Hiong of DAP.

In last year's Selangor state election, Lee won the seat for Pakatan Harapan in a four-cornered fight against candidates from PN, Muda and Parti Rakyat Malaysia.

Meanwhile, the early voting is fixed on May 7.

KKB is a mixed seat, with Malays comprising 50 per cent of the electorate, followed by Chinese (30 per cent) and Indians (18 per cent).

The state seat has been represented by an ethnic Chinese assemblyman since 2004. In the Selangor state election last year, Lee helped DAP to retain Kuala Kubu Baharu after she polled a majority of 4,119 votes in a four-cornered fight at the state seat.
