SIBU: A group of 20 BASE jumpers from Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Russia and Singapore have confirmed their participation for the Sibu BASE Jump 2009 here on Oct 31.
Sibu Tourism Board Executive Rudy Anoi told Bernama today that a Malaysian contingent, led by the country''s top jumper and BASE Jump Malaysia president Aziz Ahmad, would also take part in the event.
Aziz and his group will make trial jumps on Oct 30.
The event would start at 3pm at the 126-metre Wisma Sanyan but earlier in the morning a gathering would be held at the Sibu Town Square to introduce the jumpers to the public, he said.
Rudy said the event, listed under the Visit Sibu Year 2009, was also to introduce the extreme sport to the youths.
"Base jumping is the sport of using a parachute to jump from a fixed structure," he said.
Australian Gary Cunningham, 37, will be among the big names coming for the event.
"The electronic engineer has 16 years of experience in the sport and has made over 1,800 jumps including over 1,000 display jumps from buildings.
"He set the world record for the most BASE jumps in 24 hours when from 12 midnight on Dec 30, 2005 he completed 133 jumps off the KL Tower," Rudy said.
