No improvement in Kelantan, 3,787 in shelters

2009/11/24

KUALA LUMPUR, Tues: There has been no improvement to the flood situation in Kelantan as there has been no respite to the prevailing bad weather in the east coast.
The number of people evacuated in the state due to floods has risen to 3,787 people this morning compared with 3,303 people last night.

Of 970 families moved to shelters today, the Pasir Mas district recorded the highest number of evacuees at 2,008 people. The badly affected border town of Rantau Panjang, which has been submerged under two metres of water in this second wave of flooding in east coast states, is in the district.

A spokesman at the state flood operations centre said the number of flood evacuees in Kuala Krai now stood at 885 people, Tumpat (438), Tanah Merah (333), Kota Baharu (63) and Machang (60).

"The water levels in Sungai Golok at Rantau Panjang and Sungai Kelantan at the Customs Jetty, Krai Steps and Guillemard Bridge are above the danger level while at Sungai Galas and Sungai Lebir the levels are at the warning level," he said.

He said 21 roads had been closed to all traffic involving six districts and among them were Jalan Masuk Aring 8 dan 9 (Km15) in Gua Musang; Kota Baharu- Pantai Cahaya Bulan road (Km4); Jalan Sultan Yahya Petra, Kuala Krai; Jalan Machang-Pangkal and Meleret-Wakaf Bata in Machang; and Jalan Semerak (Km11) in Pasir Puteh.

In the Pasir Mas district, eight roads have been closed to all traffic. They are Jalan Rantau Panjang-Panglima Bayu (Km8.8 and Km8); Jalan Pengkalan Rakit (Km3; Pasir Mas-Rantau Panjang Highway (KM 22 and Km24); Pasir Mas-Meranti(Km7); and Jalan Pohon Tanjung Meranti (Km10).

As for Tanah Merah, roads closed to all traffic are Jalan Tanah Merah Kursial-Kampung Ipoh (Km6.7 and Km6.5) and Jalan Kampung Pepuyu (Km8) while in Tumpat, the situation is the same at Jalan Pohon Tanjung Pasir Pekan; Jalan Cabang Empat-Kampung Jambu- Meranti (Km6) and Jalan Keselamatan Pengkalan Kubor- Kampung Jambu.

Thus far, no casualties have reported in Kelantan in this second wave of flooding in the state.

In KUANTAN, a police spokesman at the Pahang police headquarters said only 30 people from four families remained at the flood relief centre opened up at Sekolah Kebangsaan Cherating, Kuantan.

He said the flood situation in Pahang was under control with only the Kuantan district affected.

In TERENGGANU, the flood situation is improving with the number of evacuees having dropped to 6,899 people, compared to 7,739 yesterday.

However, 496 people from Kuala Terengganu, comprising residents in Kampung Pusu Tiga, Seri Embun, Kampung Banggol Peradong, Kampung Temiang and Kampung Titian Baru were evacuated to shelters since 3pm yesterday following heavy rain which caused flooding in some parts of the district.

The districts of Kemaman, Besut, Hulu Terengganu, Marang, Dungun and Setiu in the state have been hit by floods since Monday.

Terengganu National Security Council spokesman said six relief centres had been activated in the Kuala Terengganu district. They are at Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Guntong (92 evacuees), Sekolah Kebangsaan Kompleks Gong Badak (301), Sekolah Kebangsaan Tok Jiring (50), Sekolah Kebangsaan Atas Tol (30) and Sekolah Kebagsaan Banggol Peradong (23).

The number of flood victims in other districts are Setiu (91), Kemaman (1,060), Dungun (3,099), Besut (318), Marang (1,529) and Hulu Terengganu (494). - Bernama
