2012 THEORY: End is for humanity, not planet earth

2009/11/26

KELVIN T.S.KOH, Petaling Jaya

I REFER to your report “Why the world will not end in 2012” ( NST, Oct 25) which quotes Dr David Morrison, a scientist working for the United States
National Aeronautics and Space Administration as saying that the prediction that the world would come to an end in December 2012 is rubbish.
I disagree with the scientist.

He apparently confuses the word “wo r l d ” with the term “planet earth”. There is no question our planet will continue to exist beyond 2012, unless the sun bursts into a supervova and destroys the solar system, which is highly unlikely.

The word “wo r l d ” usually means “humanity” or the “hu - man race” and not the planet earth. Samuel Huntington’s prediction of a clash of civilisations is today already a reality.

This clash involves one camp who regard their ideals of secular freedom as non-negotiable, and an opposite camp who regard their theological precepts as equally non-negotiable.

Ping pong diplomacy will end up nowhere.

The chances of a clash between the two camps is getting more likely every day and a head-on collision is highly probable in the not too distant future. The decimation of the human race will then become a distinct possibility, not necessarily in 2012, but, in my opinion, in 2018 or at the very latest 2028.
