2009/11/26
KUALA LUMPUR: MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek has urged party leaders to discuss amicably the fresh MCA polls following the announcement by vice-president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai and his group that Saturday's Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) has been called off.
While welcoming Liow and his group’s decision to call off the EGM, Dr Chua said that it was a good start to resolve the party’s conflict. "I hope that all MCA leaders and Central Committee members would be sincere and hold on to the spirit of mutual respect in discussing fresh party poll matters," Dr Chua said in his blog Thursday.
"In order for fresh party polls to take place, it would have to obtain the cooperation of all the CC members," he added. According to the party constitution, at least two-thirds of the elected CC members must resign from their post before any fresh election could be held, said Dr Chua.
Thus, Dr Chua hoped that all MCA leaders could work together in peace towards a united MCA. Liow, in a press conference at party headquarters here today, announced the calling off of the Nov 28 EGM which is to be replaced with a special briefing session on the same date.
Intensive efforts of the Barisan Nasional (BN) Chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and the Deputy Chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has resulted in the tripartite consensus of MCA President Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat, Deputy President Datuk Seri Dr. Chua Soi Lek and Vice President Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai to have fresh elections of the MCA Central Committee.
Meanwhile, MCA secretary-general Datuk Wong Foon Ming said that so far he had not been informed of any postponement of the party's Annual General Meeting (AGM). "We are still preparing for the AGM," Wong told Bernama when contacted today. He also said that he had not received any instructions to prepare for the fresh MCA polls. -- BERNAMA
