Terengganu hit by floods again

KUALA TERENGGANU, Tues: Floods again struck in Terengganu when 241 residents from three villages in Marang were moved to evacaution centres yesterday evening.
A spokesman for the Terengganu National Security Council (NSC) said the victims were residents of Kampung Paya Kijing numbering 168 people, Kampung Seberang Marang (65) and Kampung Pulau Kerengga (eight persons).

He said till now there were three evacuation centres open and most of the evacuees moved in since 6pm yesterday till this morning.

The spokesman said till now the NSC floods operation room was still open and the personnel there would be there as long as there was more than one flooded district.

Meanwhile, the spokesman for the state Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) said the water level of the main rivers in Terengganu was still at normal levels.

He said his staff always monitored the water levels to prepare for floods.

The wet season flooding first hit Terengganu early this month while the second wave saw more then 10,000 residents from all districts having to move since Nov 23.

Todate, three deaths were registered including a nine-year-old child, Tuan Nor Farah Amira Tuan Harun, who drowned in Sungai Terengganu at Kampung Getang, Telemong, Hulu Terengganu, on Nov 7.

The second victim was a 15-year-old student from Kuala Besut, Mohd Syahmi Mohd Yusof, who drowned on Nov 24, while the third victim was Muhammad Aifa Afif Mohd Yusof, 13, from Marang, who drowned while having a bath with friends on Nov 25. -- BERNAMA
