Singapore detains Malaysian for cigarette smuggling attempt

2010/02/09

SINGAPORE The Singapore border authority foiled a cigarette smuggling attempt involving a Malaysian-registered prime mover at the Tuas Checkpoint last Friday.
The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said today 8,349 cartons of cigarettes with unpaid duty were recovered from the 40-foot truck.

The customs duty and GST payable for the contraband cigarettes amounted to S$587,800 and S$53,200 respectively, ICA said.

The authority said the truck arrived at the checkpoint with a declared consignment of plastic storage containers but a routine scan showed that there were anomalies in the images inside the truck.

The ICA said a 47-year old Malaysian driver was detained to assist in their investigation. –- BERNAMA
