Andersonian award for top old boys

2010/02/08

By S. Ista Kyra

IPOH: SMK Anderson ended its year-long centennial celebrations yesterday by rewarding its most outstanding old boys with the "Andersonian of the Century" awards.
Seven notable figures received the awards given in recognition of their services and contributions to the country.

They are the late Datuk Abdul Wahab Abdul Aziz, Aminuddin Baki, D.R. Seenivasagam and Datuk Ng Khin Yee, and Professor Emeritus Wang Gungwu, Datuk Mohd Nor Khalid, fondly known as Lat, and A.I. Thilainathan.

They were chosen for their achievements in the field of law, education, government, sports as well as creative art.

Raja DiHilir Perak Raja Jaafar Raja Muda Musa, an old boy himself and the adviser of the school's centennial celebration programme, presented the awards.

Mohd Nor, who studied at the school from 1965 to 1969, said he was grateful to the school for moulding him into what he is today.

"This school has given me a great education, and now I want to contribute to it," he said.

Wang, a writer and historian, said he studied at the old school, along with academician Aminuddin between 1936 and 1945.

"The two of us were great friends and we had a good time together," he said, adding that he was proud and happy to be recognised by the Anderson fraternity.

The candidates were decided by a panel of judges, including former menteri besar Datuk Seri Tajol Rosli Ghazali, Tan Sri Mohamed Hashim Ahmad Makaruddin, Datuk Seri N.S. Selvamany and Datuk Seri Mohd Hilmi Ismail.

The panel was headed by Tan Sri Ahmad Azizuddin Zainal Abidin.
