Chew confident it will take place

GEORGE TOWN: MCA Wanita chief Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun is confident that the proposed extraordinary general meeting for Nov 28 will proceed as planned.

The call for the EGM by 16 central committee members aligned to embattled MCA vice-president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, is to facilitate fresh party polls.

Chew said this was evident following overwhelming response from party members during a donation drive to raise funds for the EGM yesterday and on Friday.

"I am confident we can have the EGM," she told reporters here yesterday.

Asked if by having another EGM, they were creating "trouble" in the party and thus disrupting the "greater unity plan" unveiled by party president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat, she said it was unfair to make such statement.

"This is all part and parcel of democracy. Whether we can proceed with the EGM is not for one or two persons to decide."

On Wednesday, MCA secretary-general Datuk Wong Foon Meng said the party would not call for a second EGM.

He said according to the party legal bureau chief the proposal by the group were "unconstitutional and unworkable".

Chew, who is also deputy women, family and community development minister, was here to attend the 10th anniversary celebration of the Penang Down's Syndrome Association.
