KUALA LUMPUR: National rider, Khairul Idham Pawi kick-started 2017 by winning the Best Rider of the Sepang International Circuit Sdn Bhd (SIC) and the Motorsport Association of Malaysia (MAM) 2016 Awards tonight.
The 18-year-old, who will be racing in Moto2 with Idemitsu HondaTeam Asia this season, received the award following his excellent performance throughout the Moto3 race last season.
Malaysia’s professional racing driver, Jazeman Jaafar emerged as the Best Car Racer while Drift King, Tengku Djan Ley Tengku Mahaleel won the National Championship Awards.

PUTRAJAYA: No Malaysian citizen was detained at John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport in the United States following the travel ban by the United States, said the Foreign Ministry.
Referring to articles which included a report that one Malaysian was among 71 detainees at New York's JFK following the travel ban, the ministry in a statement today said that it had confirmed with the Consulate General in New York that no Malaysian was detained at the airport.

KAJANG: A nursery owner and two of her employees were charged in the Kajang Sessions Court here today with the abuse of two toddlers and a baby.
The nursery owner, Sayani Ahmad, 46, and her two employees, Nur Azureen Mohamad Nordin, 24, and Nurhazirah Mohd Azuki, 25, pleaded not guilty to all the charges before Judge Noridah Adam.
Sayani faced four charges, while Nur Azureen and Nurhazirah were each charged with three counts, including abetting Sayani.

KUCHING: Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Abang Openg will announce the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for Tanjung Datu by-election on Wednesday.
Sarawak BN secretary Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi Utom said four names had been shortlisted and Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) was studying feedback to find the most suitable candidate.

KUANTAN: Pahang is now the state worst-affected by flooding, with its Civil Defence Force director Zainal Yusoff revealing that the number of flood evacuees in several district rose to 7,130 people as of 8am today, compared to 6,728 last night.
Lipis has the highest number of evacuees at 2,000 people, followed by Temerloh (1,996), Jerantut (1,078), Rompin (1,033), Bera (417), Maran (362), Pekan (205) and Raub (39).
In Kuantan, however, all flood relief centres were closed after flood waters subsided and the weather remained fine.

JOHOR BARU: Fishermen at six villages near the Pasir Gudang Port might suffer losses amounting to RM130,000 due to an oil spill following the collision of two container vessels on Tuesday.
Southern Johor Fishermen Association chairman Azli Mohd Aziz said the 137 fishermen are from Kampung Pasir Gudang Baru, Kampung Pasir Putih, Kampung Kuala Masai, Kampung Asli Kuala Masai, Kampung Asli Pasir Putih and Kampung Asli Teluk Kabung.

PASIR MAS: The flood situation in Rantau Panjang was made worse after Sungai Golok burst its banks and overflowed into the drainage system, causing extensive flooding.
Kelantan Fire and Rescue Department director Azmi Osman said the rain, which has not abated since yesterday, resulted in Sungai Golok overflowing its banks and a massive amount of water flowing into the drainage system.

KUALA LUMPUR: Typhoon Nock-Ten has been detected 852-kilometres north east of Kudat, Sabah at 8pm tonight.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department, in a statement, said the typhoon was detected at a latitude of 14.4 North and latitude of 118.4 East, moving in a westerly direction at a speed of 25-kilometres an hour.
The department said strong northeast winds, measuring between 50 to 60 kmh, and waves as high as 4.5-metres, are expected to occur along Condore and Reef North waters until Saturday.

JOHOR BARU: Police will investigate thoroughly to identify the actual cause of the fatal accident involving an express bus which plunged into a deep ravine at KM137.3 of the North-South Expressway (northbound), near the Pagoh R&R area, last Saturday.
Johor deputy police chief, Datuk Mohd Zakaria Ahmad said the investigation would be from all aspects to ascertain the actual cause of the accident, whether it was the bus driver himself, mechanical failure or the road condition.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's football fortunes suffered another blow when the December FIFA ranking list saw the country's position drop by another five spots.
According to the FIFA ranking list released on the FIFA website www.fifa.com today, Malaysia dropped from 156 in November to 161 in December.
However, it was not the worst position for Malaysia as in Jan and Feb, the country stood at 171, March 166, April & May (174), June (173), July & Aug (167), Sept (158) and Oct (164).
