CHANGLUN: Seven-year-old Tan Yao Chun, from Taman Sayang here, woke up early on Sunday and walked to SJK(C) Yit Min, accompanied by his 77-year-old grandmother, Rose Mary Chin.
However, as his peers from the neighbourhood, in crisp white and dark blue uniforms, eagerly waited for the morning bell that would mark the beginning of their school life, it was not the case for the youngest child of three.
The stateless boy, clad in a white shirt, red shorts and a pair of flip-flops, only stood at the canteen and watched his friends start school.

ALOR STAR: Three new rotavirus cases were reported today involving children aged between one and six at two hospitals in Kedah.
The three children had visited a water park at Bukit Merah on Sept 24 before coming down with diarrhoea and vomiting.
Kedah Health Department director Datuk Norhizan Ismail said two of them are warded at the Kuala Nerang Hospital while one is being warded at the Kulim Hospital.
He said the three children are in stable condition.

PENDANG: The Health Ministry is beefing up health screening at the border entrance in Johor following reports of a Malaysian infected by the Zika virus in Singapore.
Deputy Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahya said similar health screening are also being made at airport terminals in the country which hosts direct flights from Singapore, such as in Penang and Langkawi.
He said that so far, no case of Zika virus have been detected in the country based on tests made on random samples taken by the ministry.

ALOR STAR: Beginning this year, all study loans given out by the Kedah State Scholarship Board will be converted into full scholarship for university students graduating with first class honour.
In announcing the good news today, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah said the state government had amended the board’s policy to encourage university students from the state to strive for academic excellence.

ALOR STAR: The Kedah government today issued a warning to its civil servants, cautioning them against playing golf during office hours.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah said effective immediately, civil servants are also barred from playing golf overseas, or participating in golf packages with contractors, suppliers or any individuals who possess an interest in the civil servants' position.

ALOR STAR: Kedah-born footballer Mohd Faiz Subri received a RM20,000 cash incentive from the Kedah Football Association (KFA) for his historic achievement in winning the FIFA Puskas Award 2016 last week.
The reward was presented by Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah at a ceremony at the Menteri Besar's official residence, Seri Mentaloon, tonight.

ALOR STAR: A row of eight houses was gutted by fire at Taman Seri Putra, Kampung Cina, Kuala Kedah this morning.
In a statement, Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Nur Hafizah Mohd Lukman said the incident occurred at about 5.05am today.
She confirmed that no one was injured in the incident.
"More than 45 firemen from seven voluntary units were involved in putting out the fire," she said.
Nur Hafizah added that the department is conducting an investigation on the cause of the fire and estimating the losses.

KANGAR: The Malaysian Border Security Agency (Aksem) arrested a 26-year-old civil servant from Kangar, Perlis and seized a cloned Honda Odyssey in the process.
According to Perlis Aksem commander Deputy Superintendent Syed Basri Syed Ali, the Honda Odyssey is believed to have been stolen in Singapore before being smuggled into the country.
The man was arrested at an express bus terminal at about 1.15pm on Tuesday following a tip-off.

ALOR STAR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is closely monitoring civil servants in Kedah suspected of receiving kickbacks in the form of overseas holidays.
Its director Datuk Mohd Fauzi Mohamad confirmed that the commission has identified the existence of such unlawful sponsorships, offered not only to individuals, but entire families and groups (as part of packages).
