KOTA SAMARAHAN: A somber air enveloped the Sarawak General Hospital here today, as state ministers, government officials and assemblymen converged upon learning of Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem’s passing.
Many admitted that they were shocked upon hearing the news.
Sarawak Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh said he last spoke to Adenan on Friday.
“He rang me last Friday and we were supposed to meet on Monday. But then he told me he was not feeling well, thus, we had cancelled the meeting.

MIRI: A local PKR leader was shot dead by an unknown gunman at a traffic light junction in Jalan Baram, here this morning.
Miri PKR branch secretary Bill Kayong was shot at point blank as his pickup truck stopped at the junction. He died on the spot.
The politician had stood in Bekenu during the recent state polls last month.
Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Dev Kumar confirmed the case.
He said police are still gathering information on the case.

PETRA JAYA: All quarters have been urged to refrain from making wild speculations over the fate of the four Sarawakian sailors kidnapped off Pulau Ligitan in Sabah on Apr 1.
Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri James Jemut Masing said the state government has not received any confirmation over a report suggesting that the four sailors had been released by their Abu Sayyaf captors.
"So far, the Sarawak government has not received any confirmation on the release of the four kidnap victims.

KUCHING: Sarawak DAP cannot deny that the 'Adenan factor' was the main reason the Opposition party lost five seats to the Barisan Nasional.
State DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen said Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem or 'Team Adenan' had regained support for BN, causing the vote swing in the 11th Sarawak election.
The lack of prospect in changing the government, hence, resulted in the low turnout of voters and affected the party as well, he said.

KUCHING: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak arrived at Wisma Bapa Malaysia at 9.30am today to chair the weekly cabinet meeting, which is being held here.
He arrived alone and was greeted by Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem.
The closed-door meeting began at 10am and is expected to last about three hours.
Najib, who was on his rounds in Sarawak for the state polls is scheduled to attend a gathering with People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) members at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), at 3pm today.

SERIAN: Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem has challenged PKR and DAP to abolish Goods and Services Tax in Selangor and Penang before trying to sell the idea to the people of Sarawak.
"I challenge Lim Guan Eng and Azmin Ali to prove this to us (first) since they claimed that they would abolish GST once they win the state polls.
“If they can do this, why didn’t they do it in DAP-led Penang and PKR-led Selangor? ,” he asked.
He added that the two parties were unable to implement such policies.

KUCHING: Sarawak has abolished all quit rent for smallholder agriculture land and residential land, effective today.
Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem said the remission will apply to smallholder agriculture land measuring less than 100 acres.
The remission, he said, will affect 360,422 titles, amounting RM8.58 million.
"Sarawak is the first and the only state to abolish quit rent for its people," he told at a press conference held at Wisma Bapa here.
Those who had overpaid for the quit rent, he said, can request for a refund.

KUCHING: The Dr Mahathir-Lim Kit Siang declaration does not represent the sentiments and aspirations of the rakyat and is nothing more than a personal agenda.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the declaration was not mulled in the interest of the rakyat as claimed, and as such, should not be entertained.
"It was actually never the idea of the people; the majority of the people do not even agree with it (the declaration). So, please don't involve the people, it was his (Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad) own agenda," he said.

BELAGA: Two more bodies of victims from the Belaga longboat tragedy were recovered today, while one is still missing.
Sarawak Fire and Rescue Assistant Director (Operation) Farhan Sufyan Borhan said the body identified as Adriana Rosnah, 12, was found at 2pm, just 50 meters away from the scene.
Also found was the body of the youngest victim, Nur Amirsha, 4 which was recovered at about 5pm.
"Both bodies were seen floating in an area not far from the scene," said Farhan when contacted.
