Kiran's towers of strength9 January 2017 @ 10:16 AM
Last week, a number of Malaysians were stupefied by the country’s national costume for the 65th Miss Universe pageant.
Oh , heavens. It was something that you would wear only during cosplay. Or, if your cellular reception was bad.
But, a little digging into the subject will make you further understand the concept behind the outfit, deemed “hideous” by many.

LAST weekend when Harith Iskander a.k.a. Malaysia’s Godfather of Stand Up Comedy took home the coveted title of The Most Funniest Person in the World (organised by legendary American comedy club, the Laugh Factory), fans of the local comedy scene had a reason to celebrate.
It was a big deal to see a Malaysian winning The Funniest Man trophy at the finals on Dec 8 in Finland’s Hullu Poro Areena in Levi, Lapland. His performance was streamed live on Laugh Factory’s YouTube channel to a worldwide audience for online voting.
In remembrance of...19 November 2016 @ 11:00 AM
“Pah dah tak ada,” whispered my mum in her slightly trembling voice. “She didn’t make it,” she added.
Right that instance, everything around me just went silent. I could almost hear my heart pounding really hard. I felt numb, sad, angry and alone, all in one. It’s like everything had been turned upside down.
At that moment, visions of my grandmother Pah Rosni cooking a storm in the kitchen, chatting away on the sofa while watching TV, playing and spoiling her great grandchildren with sugar (before sending them home), immediately came to mind.
How much PDA is too much on social media?8 October 2016 @ 11:11 AM
WHEN popular television personality Awal Ashaari shared a photograph of him and his actress wife, Scha Alyahya, in a romantic pose and accompanied by a lovey-dovey caption — “Love of my life” — on Instagram recently, it received close to 47,000 likes.
Soon after came another lip-locking photograph, this time around by equally popular celebrity couple Rozita Che Wan and Zain Saidin. It received some 12,500 likes. Okay, not so equally, judging by the likes.
Does time really heal all wounds?17 September 2016 @ 2:20 PM
THEY say time heals all wounds. I disagree. Time alone is not enough to send grief away.
The wound is still there, but it’s what you do with the time that helps with the healing process.
That proverbial phrase “when life gives us lemons, make lemonades” is something that I hold on dearly to, especially after learning how fragile life can be, following the recent death of a loved one.
May the best film win20 August 2016 @ 11:01 AM
“It’s about time everyone gets a fair shot at the awards,” said a young producer, now active in distributing foreign titles here, adding that “then we’d really know who is the best among us”.
“When faced with competition from non-Bahasa Malaysia (BM) films, the local film industry will flourish with high-quality movies.”
The recent uproar over language segregation of award categories in the prestigious 28th Malaysian Film Festival (FFM28) was the topic at my lunch date with two young filmmakers and a producer last weekend.
From actresses to entrepreneurs4 June 2016 @ 11:14 AM
It has been super hectic past couple of weeks. Hotels, record labels, fashion houses, production houses and celebrities were all scrambling to have their events before Ramadan.
There were also relatives’ kenduri which were almost impossible to get out of.
While at a cousin’s akad nikah ceremony recently, I could not help but notice this pretty lady sitting next to me.
Looking polished and put together, I couldn’t help but admire how perfect she looked, from head to toe.
When a leap of faith is all it takes7 May 2016 @ 11:00 AM
Twenty years ago today, I took a leap of faith.
As a young TESL (or Teaching of English as a Second Language) undergraduate, becoming a journalist was never in my list of career choices.
Teaching has always been expected of me, especially since I come from a family of educators.
I got my foot in journalism by chance actually, thanks to a senior from college who eagerly wanted me to “try first lah, you sure like it”.

Manners maketh the shopper9 April 2016 @ 11:10 AM
There is always a subset of people, no matter which income level they are at, who think that shopping is great fun. Be they men or women... even though, the latter seem to do it more often.
