Any which way there's kuih

The Ramadan Bazaar at Taman Tun Dr Ismail attracts the sweet-toothed — and the mildly sweet-toothed — like bees to honey, writes NOEL ACHARIAM. This week, Streets focuses on kuih muih at street bazaars.

ONLY during the Ramadan, will one be able to find desserts from various parts of the country in one place.

At the TTDI Bazaar in Kuala Lumpur, you’ll find delectable kuih-muih from Perak, Terengganu, Kelantan, and Johor.

A favourite among the locals was Nik Salmah’s assortment of puddings. There is Custard, Bread and Caramel Pudding. “This is my first time at the bazaar and so far, response has been great,” said the 44-year-old homemaker.

I bit into her Caramel Pudding and was instantly transported to foodie heaven. It’s surprising — slight sourish tinge yet quite sweet. And it also has a condensed milk flavour.

PUDDING DAY: Nik Salmah's assortment of puddings are all winners.

Datuk Wan Yusof Embong, 59, who has been frequenting the bazaar for five years now, was delighted to find his favourite dessert here.

“Everything here is simply delicious but I’m more of traditionalist. I prefer the kuih with less sugar. I like the Apam dengan Kelapa because it’s not so sweet ... just nice,” said Embong.

“My wife and I came here yesterday. She liked the fruit pudding so much that we decided to come back here again. In my hometown of Terengganu you will be able to find a variety of puddings. The most famous is the Egg Pudding that is smothered with egg gravy. This dessert is simply delicious and it is a typical Terengganu delicacy that can only be found in my hometown,” said Embong.

Another crowd-puller is Ramli Mahmood’s Apam Beras. “This dessert is from Kedah and uses no preservatives,” said the 46-year-old.

He not only sells Apam, but also a variety of homemade drinks. Available at his stall are Air Mata Kucing, Air Kelapa, Air Soya Bandung mixed with Cincau, and Air Tebu.

Towards the end of the bazaar on Jalan Mohd Fuad 4, you will find Ishak Majid. This 26-year-old vendor was happy to describe his assortment of kuih.

“Here at my stall you will find homemade Karipap, Kuih Lapis, Jelly, Keria and Sum Sum.

“The hottest item at my stall is the Sum Sum. This traditional dessert comes from Perak. The recipe has been passed down the generations and I can assure you that you will not find this anywhere else,” said Majid.

There is only one week left before Hari Raya in which to savour these desserts, so don’t waste any time and head down to the Ramadan Bazaar at TTDI. All the mouthwatering desserts will be on sale until Friday at Jalan Mohd Fuad 2 and Jalan Mohd Fuad 4 from 2pm to 10pm daily.
