KOTA BARU: A feast that included buttered prawns, spaghetti, satay and plenty of cakes and dessert was served during the Renaissance Hotel's buka puasa for 146 children from two orphanages here recently.

Luckily, the children from Yayasan Kebajikan Anak-anak Yatim Kelantan (Yaatim) and Pertubuhan Kebajikan Anak-anak Yatim Kelantan (Pekayatim) had hearty appetites when they turned up for the do on Wednesday.

First, they queued up to take group photographs before receiving duit raya from  hotel general manager Philip Chee.

Later, they queued up again to get their share of the food.

Azura Sidik, 14, of Yaatim who gave the thumbs up for the food. Coming from a poor family in Kampung Tempoyak, Bachok, she found the hotel food to be delicious and different from the simple fare served at home.

But this soft-spoken girl who has been with the children's home for three years said she missed her mother's cooking.

Azura said her mother was forced to place her and her 16-year old sister at the home after her father died in 2000.

The third of six siblings, she said life was hard as her mother earned a meagre salary as a canteen helper.

“We never had delicious food like this at home as my mother only buys meat occasionally. Even for Raya, she used to make simple food as she was too tired.

“I do get good food at the hostel and when people invite us for meals, but I do miss her cooking.

“This Hari Raya, I can't wait to go back and see her and my siblings,” she added.

And, as for her duit raya, Azura won't get to spend it as the orphanage's management will put it into her savings account.
