KUALA TERENGGANU: The cleanliness, quality and handling of food at Ramadan bazaars throughout the state will be monitored during the fasting month to prevent food poisoning.

State Health, Unity and Consumer Affairs committee chairman Dr A. Rahman Mokhtar said similar checks conducted last year and in 2006 by the Health Department showed that food contamination at the stalls was high.

Kerabu, a mixed salad, was the most contaminated dish, followed by noodles and drinks.

The most commonly contaminated foods were those that were made by hand, half-cooked food, dishes that use coconut milk, sugar cane juice, rojak and cakes.

"From my own experience, I have treated a lot of people with food poisoning during the fasting month.
"We hope to reduce the number by monitoring the bazaars," he said after visiting the Ramadan bazaar in Marang on Wednesday.

Those found guilty of violating the Food Act 1983 and the Food Regulations 1985, under which the checks would be carried out, would be fined and their goods could be confiscated, he said.

Last year, action was taken against 31 stalls throughout the state, while 1,594 items worth RM24,709 were seized.

A total of 1,114 notices were also issued.

Dr A. Rahman also said he had not received any reports about food shortages for the upcoming Raya holiday or complaints of unreasonable price hikes.

"Every festive season, the ministry declares certain goods controlled items and closely monitors the prices for 38 days," said Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad.

"But this year, because of the escalating cost pressures faced by traders, the time period has been reduced."

"That said, traders should not take advantage of consumers during this period."

He also said the ministry would meet with all parties involved in the trade industry this Monday to list the controlled items for Raya season.

"We hope to get the assurance of traders that supplies will retail at the prices fixed this Monday."

In June, chicken was taken off the list of controlled items. Flour, sugar, cooking oil, condensed milk and bread are among the items that remain.

The Year Four pupil of Sekolah Kebangsaan Teluk Ketapang lost his mother two years ago.

Since then, he has been shuttled back and forth from one relative to another until he was brought to the orphanage last year.

He knew at once this would be home and it did not take him long to familiarise himself and make friends.

"My father is still alive but he has not kept in touch with me after he left for Kuantan a while back. Now, during school break, I only go back to my birth place in Kelulut, Marang, to stay with my mother's uncle," he said at a breaking of fast hosted by Hotel Seri Malaysia here.
Nasrul said life had been good at the orphanage, especially since he had made many new friends and was attending school regularly.

"The best time for us is during the fasting month. We get to dress up in nice clothes and attend buka puasa at nice places like hotels and resorts.

"Last year, I was surprised to receive so many gifts such as shoes, clothes and pocket money. I am looking forward to receiving more this year."

Some who went to the Malacca Sentral terminal on Monday were told that tickets had yet to be sold only to return the next day and be informed that they were too late.

Hafiz Shuib, 25, said he might not be able to return to Kota Baru due to the mix-up.

"It will be easier for all of us if there is a system for the sale of tickets. I am upset that I may not be able to go home for Raya," he said.

Norsyahila Ahmad Sahidan said her travel plans on Sept 24 had to be changed when she was told that tickets to Kulim had been sold out. She finally managed to get a ticket for RM45, up from the usual RM38.
Her friend, Arbayah Ahmad Yassin, 23, said she was in a quandary as only Transnasional Berhad had buses bouand for Temerloh and tickets were not available.

"Some clerks said the tickets had been sold out while others claimed the tickets were not on sale."

Malacca Omnibus Operators' Association chairman Razali Endun said the 30 per cent surcharge on fares would not be of much help for companies in the long run.

He said the association wanted to increase fares to offset rising costs.

"We will appreciate it if taxes on spare parts and accessories are waived to make our operations more cost-efficient." addthis_pub = 'nstonline';

PUTRAJAYA: The cabinet has agreed to subsidise 9,000 litres of diesel for every additional express bus operating during the month-long Hari Raya festive season starting Sept 15.

The move will cost the government between RM100 million and RM150 million.

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad said the cabinet agreed with the move to enable Muslims to celebrate Hari Raya with their families.

"We do not want anything that could disrupt balik kampung," he said after the launch of Bernama's Web TV by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi yesterday.

Shahrir said the move would encourage bus operators to increase the number of buses to cater for the Hari Raya rush.
About 1,900 additional buses were made available during last year's Hari Raya.

"We estimate the number of additional buses this year to exceed 2,000. This is a large subsidy by the government."

Pan Malaysian Bus Operators' Association president Datuk Ashfar Ali had said it could not force its 111 members to provide additional buses.

He said bus companies were reluctant to incur losses by offering additional bus services although bus tickets for the holiday season were already sold out.

Konsortium Transnasional, the nation's largest and most popular bus company, had taken this stance and others could be expected to follow suit.

Ashfar also said most bus companies were still facing problems getting the exact quota of subsidised diesel for their buses despite the government's assurance two months ago to look into this matter.

He said the government had also not looked into the association's request, made last October, for a 100 per cent rise in bus fares to offset rising operation costs.

The government last week approved a 30 per cent surcharge on tickets for express buses during the Hari Raya period.

Shahrir said the government might reduce fuel prices before Hari Raya.

"The world's prices are presently stable and I hope they will go down further. God willing, before Hari Raya, we may get this good news. Everybody, including myself, wants to see the prices reduced. Just pray that the world's oil prices do not go up."

On Aug 22, the pump price of petrol was reduced to RM2.55 from RM2.70 per litre (RON 97) and diesel to RM2.50 from RM2.58 per litre.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahim Sheikh Abdul Razak manning his father’s fruit stall at the Ramadan Bazaar in Kuala Ibai, Kuala Terengganu.

KUALA TERENGGANU: His Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) examination is about a week away but duty comes first for Sheikh Mujibur Rahim Sheikh Abdul Razak at a Ramadan bazaar in Kuala Ibai near here yesterday.

The 12-year-old student at Sekolah Kebangsaan Pusat Kuala Ibai said it was not that he did not want to stay home and study, but he knew that his father's fruit stall at the bazaar would be packed with customers from late afternoon until breaking fast time.

In fact, the serious-looking lad said manning the stall was a good way to practise his arithmetic skills as he claimed there was no better way to learn addition, subtraction, division and multiplication than by handling real money.

"There's little room for error here as I will get scolded by customers if I give them the wrong change.

"Also, my father will get mad at me when he finds out the amount of fruits sold does not tally with the money received."

The youngest of three children, Sheikh Mujibur said his father, who mows lawns for a living, often had to run errands in the afternoon.

He felt it was his responsibility to help out at the stall for a few hours each day during the fasting month as he had done the previous year.

"It is not like I play truant or something.

"I still have to study for a few hours after breaking my fast," said Sheikh Mujibur who admitted he did not fare too well in his trial examination as he only managed to score a pass in three subjects out of five.

However, he said although he probably could not do much within a week to prepare for the UPSR examination, he thought he would do better in the test proper compared with the trials.

"But at the moment, I am only interested in selling watermelons and pineapples to the hungry and thirsty customers."

KUANTAN: With the start of the fasting month on Monday, Ramadan bazaar traders here are going full force to cater to an anticipated flood of hungry customers.

The annual bazaar in Jalan Stadium is among the famous spots in town selling a large array of delicacies which include desserts such as puding diraja and akok beserah.

Traditional Malay dishes popular for buka puasa are on offer, including the famous murtabak mengkasar, which is a recipe from the royal town of Pekan here.

There are about 200 stalls in Jalan Stadium and most of the traders are regulars who have been running their business at the site since it opened in 1986.

The bazaar is open as early as 3pm and receives customers until it is almost time for Muslims to break fast.
One of the traders, Supiyan Dollah, 46, who sells Malay delicacies, said his stall had won several awards during the fasting month over the past few years.

"The Sultan of Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah is our regular customer during the fasting month.

"That is the reason why we hang the banner," he said, pointing to a yellow banner which reads "Daulat Tuanku".

Normah Mat Ali, 52, who sells Penang assam laksa and drinks, said it was interesting to see visitors "window shopping" from one stall to another.

"Once the fasting month begins, this place is packed with people and traders.

"For us traders, it is the time to earn extra money to prepare for Hari Raya Aidilfitri."
