KUALA LUMPUR: It was a day full of surprises for 30 children from the Asrama Damai home when they were invited to break their fast at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club in Bukit Kiara yesterday.
The club organised activities to keep the children, aged between 8 and 15, occupied before breaking fast.
It started off with a two-hour movie, Mr Bean’s Holiday at the club’s theatre. The children had a fun time laughing and imitating Rowan Atkinson’s character.
“He is really funny. I love all his series and movies,” said Sulaiman Khalif, 8. He had been staying at the home for two years where his father had left him after his mother died.
After the movie, the children were taken to the club’s restaurant where they received school bags and stationery. They were also given books.
At 5pm, the children took turns to make dodol at the club’s compound. They made about 300 containers and some would be sold at the club atRM5 per container.

The money raised from the sale would be channelled to Asrama Damai, which not only houses orphans but single mothers, the poor and needy.
“I’m so happy to be here although it’s the first year I’m away from home. I have many friends and can learn to be independent,” said Nur Irina Idora Mohd Rahim, 15. Her parents died in 2004 and her 70-year-old grandmother sent her to the home last year.
Later, the children’s creativity was tested where they competed in decorating cakes with icing and sweets. All six groups received goodie bags for their effort.
After the breaking of fast and maghrib prayer, the children performed a Japanese song entitled Mirae and received duit raya from the club’s executive director Ahmad Kushairy Ghani and the club’s liaison committee chairman Datuk Abu Hassan Mohamed.
The event did not end there as they were surprised by the appearance of artistes such as Akbar, Que Haidar, Awal Ashaari and Farid Kamil. The stars mingled with the children and had an autograph-signing session.
