KUALA TERENGGANU: It may not be the typical fare for breaking fast but mooncakes are proving to be a popular choice here, especially with Mid-Autumn Festival less than a week away.
The sweet cakes are available at various outlets in town but the most popular is at Homemade Cafe on Jalan Bandar in Kampung China.
Owner Jennifer Eng, 50, said, at first, it was her soya drink and exotic fruit juices which attracted a number of Muslims to her cafe.
"It just so happens that this year, the mooncake festival falls on Sept 24, which falls during the fasting month.
"I sell a lot of mooncakes during this time of the year and I guess my Muslim customers just can't resist, since I make halal mooncakes."
While her Chinese customers prefer traditional lotus and redbean mooncakes, her non-Chinese buyers tend to pick jelly mooncakes which come with chocolate and yam flavours.
Meanwhile, a family of three said they wanted to break the routine by breaking fast with mooncakes.
Azmi Udin, 35, accompanied by his wife, Farihah Abdul Ghani, 27, and son Danial Arif, 7, said they were hooked on jelly mooncakes after trying them for the first time a week earlier.
"Jenny is also filling us in on the history of the Mid-Autumn Festival," said Azmi.
