SOMEONE pulled my shirt and said: "Look at this Korean actress. Isn't she sweet?" At that time, I knew next to nothing about Korean actresses, so I said: "What's the big deal?"
One quick glance later, I responded: "Hey, this one has big eyes!" Of course, we were then referring to Song Hye-kyo (pronounced as "hakkyo" or "yookgyo", depending on how well you know her). Anyway, I first saw Hye-kyo in K-drama Hotelier.
She looks pretty cute in her role as the daughter of a tycoon. Yes, she was a bit chubby but I forgave her for that physical indiscretion.
Recently, I saw some new pictures of Hye-kyo and nearly didn't recognise her. Like most actresses her age, she went on a slimming course and has succeeded in achieving a "new look."
Those who swear by their K-drama collections say Song Hye-kyo has got what is described as a "guy magnet" quality. In other words, when a male looks in her direction, he is hooked. That's putting it rather simplistically.
The second time I saw Hye-kyo was in Autumn In My Heart. I have already mentioned in an earlier post that Autumn In My Heart was one of the most dreadfully sad TV series I have ever seen. It was like eating five bitter gourds at one go.
Hye-kyo performed admirably in that story. I thought she had the makings of another Lee Young Ae. Every actress is different but some starlets have a potential that a good director can spot straightaway.
Song Hye-kyo is nicknamed "woodpecker". Apparently, she talks like one. That's most interesting.
Haven't come across any girl with that trait. So I am wondering what it's like to listen to her talk. It must be quite a challenging dialogue.
Born Feb 26, 1982, the South Korean actress' education trail saw her moving from the Sook-Myung Women's Junior High School to Eun Kwang Women's High School.
She then was admitted into the Se-Jong University where she did not walk out with a degree.
I suppose the call or lure of the acting profession proved to be too strong for her. When she was 14 years old, Hye-kyo entered and won the top prize in the SunKyung Smart contest.
The company sells school uniforms and it was looking for a particular face and person for its brand.
Winning that prize quickly led Song Hye-kyo to a morning drama series called Happy Morning (1996). Her next drama was First Love. Actually, I didn't recognise her in that series. She must have been a little girl then (14-year-old kid).
Then a long list of K-dramas followed: Wedding Dress, Six Siblings, Deadly Eyes, Marching, A White Night, Who Am I? Sweet Bride, Soonpoong Clinic, Endless Love, Guardian Angel, Hotelier, All In, Sunlight Pours Down and Full House.
Those dramas that made her a household name were Full House (co-star Rain), All In and Autumn Fairy Tale.
Standing in her bare feet at 161cm, Hye-kyo is of average Korean woman height. She's not as tall as Choi Ji-Woo (175cm) or as pretty as some Korean actresses whom I do not wish to name (too risky. Others might throw stones!).
Anyway, Song Hye-kyo's most recent hit series was My Girl And I (2005). It seems that she's popping up everywhere on the television screen.
Considering in the number of scripts she has been offered and accepted, she's currently a hot property in the Korean drama series market.
Right now, Hye-kyo is on song (pun intended). We will be hearing and seeing more of her and from her henceforth. Can't keep a pretty face down, you know.
She's talented, too. Pretty good actress. Has a way of projecting her most likeable face on the screen and into our living rooms. If she keeps it up, very soon she will move up to Choi Ji-woo's and Lee Young Ae's level.

She is very famous for being a natural beauty. Meaning she has NEVER done any plastic surgery.
My Girl and I was a movie, not a drama series. It did poorly in Korea because the story was boring. It was a remake of a Japanese story.
I don't think she'll be doing dramas anymore. Full House was her last one. She is now officially a movie star. But who knows for sure about the future?.. I doubt she'll do dramas for a while at least.
She just finished shooting her new movie, Hwang Jini. It is the most anticipated movie this year. (I think it will come out in Korea this June or July). She went through tremedous hardships for that movie. Hwang Jini is based on a real Korean historical person. There are also several best seller books on her. There also was a T.V. drama version starring another actress that ended recently. But Song Hye Kyo's movie version is said to be more accurate, high class and sophisticated.

In other countries, as long as fans always see their star either in tube or in wide screen, doesnt matter as long as she will not allow us to long for her.
I can not agree that SHK is less prettier than Lee Young ah or Choi Jee Woo, in truth she is much much prettier than these stars.
She's a good performer as well. Her time and project will come along soon and she will be held in higher stature than these stars.
Hopefully, she will not think twice in accepting the sequel of FULL HOUSE. She should recognize where she excel and accept the cutie role - important thing is she is loved by her million fans, and would like her to be always in limelight.
