Blazing the Movie Trail:: Oh! Feel Young for once, for heaven's sake

I HAVE had my fair share of Korean dramas. Unless you have just dropped in from one of those planets light years away from Earth, you won't know that K-dramas are currently the hottest thing in town since Chubby Checker and the Twist.

While many Korean dramas are watchable, many are actually mediocre and their plots are just as bad as many of the TV series from Hong Kong and Taiwan over the years.

Sometimes, scriptwriters do run out of ideas. However, not so long ago, I stumbled onto one called Oh! Feel Young.

Actually, it's Korean title is more appropriate and logical. It was Oh! Pil-seung, Bong Soon-young, named after the two principal characters of the show.

Initially, I thought what an insipid name for a K-drama series. However, after testing my TV stamina for K-dramas after three weeks of it, I was suitably hooked.

The story is not earth-shakingly good but it did eliminate some of the stress accumulated in the office over a period of eight hours. Ahn Jae-wook plays Oh Pil-seung.

He's a listless, likeable 28-year-old guy who's only too happy to bum around for the rest of his life. However, destiny has got certain plans for him.

Before you could shout "oh, dear!", Oh Pil-seung found himself being recruited to head a big conglomerate because somebody is pretty sure he's the unofficial son of the president of the company who passed away quite unexpectedly.

But the person who holds all the power for the time being is the grandmother who can't stand nonsense and fools, and Pil-seung is a bit of both.

Never mind, he doesn't actually want the job but he feels he owes it to himself to at least give it a try. Along the way, his streetwise ways endeared him to several people.

Chief among these characters is Bong Sun-young (Chae Rim) who's sort of an old buddy of Oh. Sun-young is one of the unluckiest person when it comes to love.

She has been dumped by 19 men and is going on the hunt for the 20th when Oh shows up.

Both of them originally started out as friends until Oh begins to feel maybe there's something that his heart is telling him. Sun-young treats Oh like the fool he is and occasionally punches the daylights out of him.

Chae Rim is clearly one of the cutest Korean actresses I have ever come across. Why, she doesn't even look like a Korean. She looks more like a Chinese.

Hope no Korean lass will get insulted but that's the truth. Anyway, Sun-young is relentlessly courted by Yun Jae-ung (Ryu Jin) who's the upstart son of the personal adviser to the grand old lady of the company.

Jae-ung is the high-powered executive in the planning department. He's also tall, handsome and quite confident of his abilities to take on any assignment and succeed.

Sun-young's innocent ways attracted him and he fell head over heels in love with her. All would be well if not for Oh who seems to get Sun-young's attention all the time.

This drama has a lot of comedic moments. It's all fun and laughter when it should and serious when it's necessary. It won't earn an A from me but I will be only too happy to give it a B+.

The clincher for that plus rating will have to be Noh Yu-jeong (Park Seon-yeong).

She's the special assistant assigned to train Oh to be the company chief executive in due course. Noh started off as being the cold, highly intelligent and physically skilled (martial arts and swimming) fiance of the late CEO's sone who also died suddenly.

At first, one would think she's a misfit in the show. Then gradually, it dawns on the viewer that she plays the third person in Oh's life.

Noh begins to develop feelings for Oh and like the strong character she portrays, she keeps her inner feelings very much to herself. The pain in her heart is somewhat felt by all males watching the show as well.

Noh comes across as quiet, determined and geared to excellence in whatever field she pursues.

One can help feeling sorry for her because Oh will never fall in love with her but strangely she's satisfied with that, especially when she gets the opportunity to spend time with him and be in close proximity to Oh all the time.

That begs the question, are some women so easily satisfied when it comes to love? Never, that's rubbish, but then this is a K-drama series. You are not supposed to get too taken up by the plot.

Coming back to Ahn Jae-wook, I was surprised to learn that he's actually a big time singer in his spare time. In fact, he's more popular as a singer than an actor.

If you have the opportunity to see his concerts DVD, you will be quite shocked to grasp the humungus reaction his Japanese fans give him everytime he goes to Japan.

Oh! Feel Young is a very entertaining show but my only gripe is the conclusion, which I thought, could have been better or better handled. A small thumbs-down for you, the scriptwriter.
