SKILLED TALENT: Compressed air from human footsteps may be used to generate electricity in the future. UCSI University student Tiffany Chung Wei Ning, who is keen on environmental conservation, won a gold medal at the 3rd Life Invention Competition for Green Growth 2011 in Korea for her novel research.
Her work has been recognised by the International Conference on Renewable Engineering Technology and at the 6th International Conference on Advanced Computational Engineering and Experimenting 2012. She is extrapolating her research to road humps and railways.
Chung is a product of the government’s initiative to produce more highly skilled talent by 2020 under the Entry Point Project 10.
The Higher Education Ministry has appointed the university to spearhead the programme.
Chung’s achievement was highlighted at the tertiary institution’s recent convocation ceremony together with that of Professor Dr Kwan Teck Kim, Tan Lea Ngar and Khong Mei Li.
Kwan, who has made significant contributions to research and education in Science and Medicine for more than 35 years, was conferred the title of Emeritus Professor at the event.
Apart from his research efforts, Kwan is recognised for establishing the university’s Faculties of Applied Sciences, Medicine and Health Sciences, and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and for initiating Curtin University of Technology’s twinning programme in Pharmacy with the higher education institution.
This year’s valedictorian, Tan, is a multiple Dean’s List Award holder and has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities in myriad roles. She was elected events director of the Student Council; organising chairperson for Unifest, an outdoor concert to support music talents; and head designer for the university’s Hailer Newsletter, to name a few.
Two-time University Presidential Award winner Khong bagged the Best Oral Presenter prize at the recent 23rd Inter-varsity Biochemistry Seminar for her presentation on the origins of poisonous organelles and toxins in Aurelia aurita (moon jellyfish), Khong intends to further her research with the hope of making therapeutic discoveries.
