PLEDGES: The University of Southampton has introduced two scholarships for students accepted to study Mechanical Engineering at the Malaysia campus. They are the James Dyson Foundation and the Lloyd's Register Education Trust.

The James Dyson Foundation Scholarship is part of a pledge to fund RM4.9 million of bursaries in the United Kingdom, United States and Asia over the next five years. The scholarship will support one student who progresses into years three and four in the UK to complete the Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering through the Southampton programme.

The Lloyd's Register Educational Trust will offer 18 undergraduate scholarships for six scholars. The study grants are valued at more than RM1.12 million over four years starting from the academic year of 2013 to 2014. The first scholarships will be awarded to students completing their first year in 2013 to support their progression through the following three years of study.

In addition, the university also offers inaugural scholarships worth RM4,000 to students who register this year, with 10 high-performing Malaysian students receiving a 25 per cent financial aid on first-year entry, exclusive of the inaugural scholarship.

The Malaysian campus is scheduled to open in October

The field of Mechanical Engineering will be given a boost with the scholarships
