Everyone is superstitious in some way or another. Different religions have different beliefs and superstitions. In the Hindu religion, we have many beliefs and superstitions ranging from the correct position for sleeping to what eye twitches mean.
Over the past few years, I have learnt quite a few superstitions that most Indians believe. For example, my dad tells me not to sneeze when we are leaving the house because it means we will be late in arriving at our destination and our purpose will not be fulfilled. If this happens, we have to re-enter the house and have a drink of water before leaving again.
Another belief is that we shouldn’t ask ‘Where are you going?’ when a person is leaving because doing so may interfere with the purpose of their visit. An indication that someone is thinking of you is when you repeatedly yawn or cough while eating and drinking.
Being left-handed, I break one very important belief most of the time, which is that we shouldn’t give or receive anything with our left hand. And you all know what we use our left hand for.
Going back to what I mentioned earlier, we shouldn’t sleep with our head facing north or west. You have to sleep with your head facing east or west. Also, when a woman’s left eye twitches, it is supposed to bring her good luck, whereas when a man’s right eye twitches, it will bring him good luck. Another superstitious belief is if a cat crosses your path, you should follow a different path; otherwise, this is a bad omen.
Although we have dealt with many facts regarding superstitions, in modern times, we should be able to make decisions based on our personal lives and should not indulge in these superstitious beliefs too much.
