Making the cut

The Olympic Games used to be a sporting event where only men who speak Greek are allowed to take part in the tournament. No women were allowed to enter the arena then. Even so, the games brought together the best athletes to compete against each other.

No one in ancient Greece would have expected that, in time, almost every country would take part in this well-known sporting event. In the London 2012 event, more than 10,000 athletes from 205 members of National Olympic Committees (NOCs) will participate with at least one sportsperson being eligible to compete in this prestigious arena.

After the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles, the Netherlands’ Antilles Olympic Committee planned to continue to function until its membership was withdrawn by the IOC Executive Committee in 2011. However, Dutch Antillean athletes who qualified for the 2012 Olympics will be allowed to participate independently.

As for the Paralympics, the Solomon Islands will be participating in the Paralympic Games for the first time this year along with the usual participants.

Among the countries participating in both the Olympics and the Paralympics are Argentina, Belgium, China, Denmark, Estonia, Fiji, Great Britain, India, South Korea, South Africa, Malaysia and Sweden.
