With Nyan Cat, 9gag, Tumblr and YouTube, there is so much information at our fingertips and so many ways to share it. However, safety should come first. Here are some tips to keep you safe and sound on YouTube.
1. Never reveal your personal information
You can post a video showing the world how you gobble down 10 chicken wings per minute or how you snore adorably while you sleep, but always keep your personal information out of sight. Your real name, age, location and telephone number should be private. YouTube is open to everyone. You never know who will stumble across your videos. So play it safe if you do not want to be stalked by a horrible paedophile.
2. Beware, don’t be fooled by foxes
You can leave comments or share your views on a particular video. The buzz is usually exciting, with different users from various parts of the world all discussing one topic. However, when talking to other users, don’t be fooled by their usernames. You could be talking to “princessangel“ for a year, assuming that she’s a young girl with the same interests as you. But who knows? Princessangel could be a 60-year-old man trying to trick you into letting your guard down. Remember, you cannot see the person you’re talking to.
3. Avoid inappropriate videos
I know you are tech-savvy, but please use it in the right way. If you are under 18, admit that you are still too young to watch pornographic videos or violent, gory massacre scenes. Be patient and wait a few more years until you reach the legal age!
The Internet has connected teens all over the world. But remember to protect yourself online!
