SURVEY: Unusual superstitions

When I was young, I learnt and believed that placing a book under my pillow before I sleep will help me remember everything written inside it. I did just that during my primary school days, sleeping uncomfortably with a storybook under my pillow to memorise the story word for word for our annual storytelling competition. Thinking about it now, my actions seem ridiculously foolish!

My elders tell me not to leave my hair untied or wash or comb my hair at night. I am also not allowed to take an object from someone’s hands on the wedding day of a close relative.

Cutting your fingernails at night brings you bad luck. I’m guessing the real reason behind this superstition is that you could seriously injure yourself if you can’t see clearly at night.

When I hear about superstitions, I remember a Malay one that holds if someone sings in the kitchen, especially the ladies, she (or he) may marry an old man (or woman). I do not know how true it is but be cautious!

The spookiest and most unusual superstition I have heard is if we take the teardrop of a dog and rub it into our own tears, we will be able to see supernatural things such as ghosts.

My superstition is quite crazy. When I accidentally think about something like ‘how to detect a missing phone’, I find what I’m looking for right away. My phone had just been stolen. Weird, isn’t it? And that was not the first time. It’s always happening to me.

In Poland, there is a belief that girls who grind poppy seeds on Christmas Eve will have good luck in their marriage. After eating dinner and leaving the house on this day, the direction of the first dog bark they hear points to where their future husband will come from.

My mom once said that you mustn’t shake someone’s hand above a doorstep since it can cause bad things to happen, including death!

It’s bad luck to leave a house through a different door than the one used to enter it.
