Warding off bad luck

Do you suffer from friggatriskaidekaphobia? Also known as the fear of Friday the 13th, it is one of many superstitions people all over the world believe in. Even celebrities are rumoured to have their own superstitions.

Jennifer Aniston has one related to flying. “If I walk onto an airplane, I always have to get on with my right foot first and tap the outside of the plane. I have always done it for luck. Someone told me to do it, and I don’t remember when that was. But it has kind of stuck.”

She is not alone in this matter. Megan Fox also has a flying ritual. She told Conan O’Brien that she always listens to Britney Spears on airplanes because “... it’s not my destiny to die listening to a Britney Spears album”.

Apparently, Cameron Diaz always wears a chain she received as a gift because she was told it had anti-aging effects. She also once said, “I knock on wood all day long… constantly. But I’ve also flown on Friday the 13th in a storm with a black cat on my lap, so I’m not that superstitious”.

Paris Hilton also has a tendency to knock on wood if someone says something that she doesn’t want to happen, and she believes that desires come true if you think of them at 11:11.

Even though walking under a ladder is generally thought to bring bad luck, Batman star Christian Bale thinks the opposite is true. Whenever he comes across a ladder, he makes a point of walking under it.

President Barack Obama carries a collection of lucky charms. One of them is a tiny idol of Hanuman. The others are a bracelet belonging to a US soldier deployed to Afghanistan, a gambler’s lucky chit and a small locket with images of the Madonna and child.

Actor and racecar driver Patrick Dempsey wears a lucky charm. Famous for his role as Dr Shepherd in Grey’s Anatomy, Patrick carries or wears his red Puma racing shoes wherever he goes.

David Beckham does the opposite. Ever since he started representing Los Angeles Galaxy, the famous British footballer always wears a new pair of shoes at every match because he believes this brings him luck.

Lastly, Coldplay’s frontman Chris Martin performs no less than 18 rituals before a performance. One of them includes not going on stage without first brushing his teeth. He believes that this helps him to hit the right notes.
