Asian are known for being small in size, but whoever said little people can’t do much are about to be proven wrong. Here are a few that have made their home country proud.
Datuk Michelle Yeoh Choo-Keng
This Malaysian-born actress is one of the few Asians that has been a Bond girl. In 1997, People magazine name Michelle as one of the 50 Most Beautiful People in the World. She is also known for doing her own stunt acts in action films. Michelle Yeoh is one very talented person and has definitely made a name for herself in Hollywood.
Dato’ Jimmy Choo Yeang Keat
Which girl does not know Jimmy Choo. This London-based Malaysian is an amazing designer. Jimmy first made a pair of shoes at the tender age of 11. This proud Malaysian is one of the lucky Asians who was given an Order of the British Empire title because of his contributions to the fashion industry.
Park Ji-Sung
Park Ji-Sung is a player with the famous Manchester United. He has scored a total of 55 goals to date. In 2008, Park was given the Best Asian Player Award by FIFA.com and in 2010, he was KFA’s Footballer of the Year. He represents his nation in the FIFA World Cup every year and has definitely made his country proud. This Korean footballer is most definitely a big ball of success.
Datuk Lee Chong Wei
Lee Chong Wei has definitely done us all proud with his achievements in his niche: badminton. This internationally known athlete started playing badminton when he was only 11 years old. In 2008, Chong Wei won silver medal in the Summer Olympics and in 2011, he was BWF’s Player of the Year. From 2003 to date, Chong Wei secure 41 titles and 20 runner-ups. Chong Wei is undoubtedly a great badminton player; he has worked very hard to get to where he is today.
Dato’ Nicol Ann David
She is Malaysia’s very own squash queen. Nicol is the first Asian woman to be ranked the world’s number one in squash. Nicol started playing when she was only five, and by eight years old, she won a silver medal at the Penang State Junior Championship. At the age of 15, Nicol was the youngest to become the world junior champion. Nicol has won 58 titles and 14 runner-up s to date. Our squash queen is an amazing squash player and is determined to stay at the top.
Dalip Singh Rana
Known as The Great Khali, Rana is a professional wrestler from India. He is the first Indian wrestler to sign a contract with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Rana has gone up against some of the best wrestlers including The Undertaker. He has definitely done India proud with his extraordinary skills in bringing down a challenge. Hats off to The Great Khali!
Charice Pempengco
Only 19 but Charice has a voice so powerful, Oprah called her the Most Talented Girl in the World. She landed a spot in Glee, earned her very own star on the Eastwood City Walk of Fame and sing with one of her favourite singers, Celine Dion. Charice has made the Philippines so proud. She has inspired many ‘little people’ everywhere to follow their dreams.
Aishwarya Rai-Bachan
Aishwarya Rai is known for her movies in various languages such as Tamil, Hindi, English, Telugu and Bengali. This Indian beauty also won the Miss World Pageant in 1994, and in 2003, became the brand ambassador of L’Oreal. Aishwarya is not just a pretty face, she does a lot of social work. Aishwarya became the first Indian actress to become a judge at the Cannes Film Festival. She has achieved a great deal in the eyes of the world.
Jackie Chan
Well known for his martial arts skills, Jackie Chan is also an actor, singer and comedian. He is one of the lucky Asians who earned his very own star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. He has also won awards such as the People’s Choice Awards for Favourite Action Star and the Kid’s Choice Awards for Favourite Butt Kicker, both in 2011. Jackie Chan has acted alongside Hollywood stars such as Chris Tucker and Owen Wilson.
