INTERACTIVE ACTIVITIES: Pupils learn about river awareness and conservation
SJK (T) Vivekananda teachers and pupils got their feet wet while learning about the importance of rivers in a recent water awareness programme at Lembah Kiara Recreation Park, Taman Tun Dr Ismail in Kuala Lumpur.
Organised by Salcon Bhd as part of its corporate social responsibility programme in collaboration with Water Watch Penang and Malaysian Water Partnership, the initiative aims to create awareness of the importance of water conservation among schoolchildren.
A total of 30 pupils accompanied by three teachers took part in this event. Activities such as water sampling methods and also checks on micro-organisms were carried out throughout the project.
Pupils participated in a number of interesting and interactive activities such as water testing, a process in which the flow rate, clarity, colour and smell of water is examined.
They were also guided through monitoring the alkaline and acidic levels of the river water, in addition to looking for aquatic organisms which are an indication of the health level of the river. This taught them that rivers are not only flowing water bodies, but also home to many creatures and serve a vital role in the ecosystem.
Salcon senior manager Chern Meng Gaik said: “We are pleased to work with committed partners such as Water Watch Penang to bring this programme to schools in the Klang Valley. We hope to benefit more schoolchildren and bring about greater awareness of the importance of our precious resource, water.”
Learning outside the classroom reinforces the syllabus. SJK (T) Vivekananda senior assistant Vichitra Radhakrishnan is glad that a corporate entity has added more educational activities to drive lessons home. “The pupils responded positively to the activities,” she says, adding that the initiative offered participants new exposure and perspective.
With six river programmes successfully conducted, Salcon aims to target more schools in the future to further spread the word about river conservation in the hope that the younger generation will learn to treat rivers with respect and teach future generations.
