12 factories found with tampered electric meters

Kota Kinabalu: Twelve factory premises in Sabah were found to have tampered with their electricity meters since early this year.

Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) senior general manager (Asset Management)Ahmad Fuad Md Kasim said the factories were identified here and in Kolombong, Kepayan and Penampang through two operations conducted with the Energy Commission.

"All the culprits found to be stealing electricity will be charged in court," he told reporters during an operation at a packaging factory in Penampang, near here, today.    

In another development, Ahmad Fuad said 12 consumers were detected stealing electricity by making illegal connections and tampering with their meters during 12 integrated operations conducted in Sabah and Labuan since last September.    

He also said that SESB had won 15 claims on power theft amounting to RM250,000 which were taken to court since 2006. The offenders were charged under Section 37(3) of the Electricity Supply Act 1990 which provides for a fine not exceeding RM100,000 or jail term of not more than three years, or both.

Ahmad Fuad said SESB would intensify enforcement including conducting surprise checks in view of SESB losing RM11 million since 2008 from various offences involving 1,084 registered consumers in Sabah and Labuan. -- Bernama
