Chong Wei: Focus on winning medals not incentives

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Lee Chong Wei urged Malaysian shuttlers to focus on winning medals at the London Olympics and not be intimidated by the incentives offered.

 

The 29-year-old Penangite who welcomed the latest incentive of gold bar worth more than RM2 million, offered by the Kuala Lumpur Racket Club (KLRC) President Datuk Seri Andrew Kam, said players should not be focused on incentives but rather work hard to win.
 
"Incentives will automatically come when we succeed at international level and that can become an inspiration to win. To me, preparing for the Olympics is more important now than to think about incentives," he told reporters when met at the ceremony where Kam announced the incentive to shuttlers who win gold medals in London.
 
Kam said he would offer a gold bar weighing 12.5kg, worth more than RM2 million, to be shared by shuttlers who won gold medals at the London Olympics.
 
Chong Wei, the current world number two and former world number one, has just recovered from an ankle injury which he had suffered during the Thomas Cup Finals in Wuhan, China in May.
 
The 2008 Beijing Olympics men's singles silver medallist is seen as Malaysia's best gold medal prospect in London. --BERNAMA
