Moderate quake hits Irian Jaya


KUALA LUMPUR -- A moderate earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale hit Irian Jaya, Indonesia at 1.57am today.

The Meteorological Department in a statement said the earthquake's epicentre was 491km southeast of Sorong, Indonesia and 1,971km southeast of Semporna, Sabah.

However, no tsunami threat was issued. -- BERNAMA
