KUALA LUMPUR: Muslim non-governmental organisations (NGO) in the country should play a more active role in providing religious guidance to new converts in the Orang Asli community.

This year's National Maulidur Rasul Award recipient, Hussein Ngah Yin, said today, the converts needed guidance so that they could better carry out their responsibilities as required by their new religion.

The 59-year-old Orang Asli community chief in Bukit Kala, Gombak said it was through guidance and encouragement from Muslim friends that he decided to embrace Islam in 2008.

Therefore, he hoped volunteers from Muslim NGOs could frequently visit Orang Asli villages to establish links and teach them more on the religion to strengthen their beliefs.

"Most of us were born and raised without a religion, and we will usually choose our religion when we are adults and able to think for ourselves," he added. -- BERNAMA
