SHAH ALAM: Police urged the public who have previously dealt with syndicates that sell a variety of fake academic scrolls to come forward and help with the investigations.

Selangor deputy police chief Datuk A. Thaiveegan assured individuals who come forward to give evidence would  not be arrested because the authorities only needed information from them to complete investigations.

He said so far the state Commercial Criminal Investigation Department has only recorded evidence from 40 individuals who have used the syndicate's service to procure degrees.

He said police were still carrying out detailed investigations to identify the suspects who used the element of fraud while conducting transcations.

"Two suspects involved in the case were released on  bail after police took statements from them," he told reporters during a press conference at the state police headquarters, here, today.

It was reported earlier that  several VIPs were among 525 individuals believed to have spent thousands of ringgit to purchase fake academic scrolls from foreign universities.

Police revealed this last week after they raided two premises in Cheras and Subang Jaya and seized computers and paraphernalia believed to have been used in producing the false documents.

During the raid two individuals, a 37-year-old company director and a 36-year-old woman, have been detained to facilitate investigations.

It is believed that the two suspects, who operated from an office in USJ 10, were believed to have raked in about RM5 million by selling fake academic scrolls since 2003.
