PADANG SERAI: The government is serious about helping the needy that it has allocated RM1.4 billion this year for the Program Kebajikan Rakyat 1Malaysia (KAR1SMA) to improve their lot.
Women, Family and Community Development Deputy Minister Datuk Heng Seai Kie said the programme which would benefit more than 500,000 of the urban and rural poor and needy was aimed at ultimately eradicating poverty.
Heng was met after opening the 1Malaysia Community Carnival for the Kulim district held at Sekolah Kebangsaan Pagar Museh, near here, today.
Over 2,000 residents attended the one-day carnival with 11 government and private sector agencies having set up exhibition booths at the venue.
Meanwhile, Heng said it was vital for the people to maintain unity for continued economic development and stability.
She said the dissemination of video recording of the April 28 Bersih 3.0 gathering by certain opposition leaders had tarnished Malaysia's image in the eyes of foreign tourists and investors.
Heng said that when she attended an international conference in China recently, some of the participants from the United States and Europe she met had asked her about the level of security in Malaysia.
"What they (opposition leaders) have done tantamounts to betrayal to the country which is totally unacceptable," she added.
At the event, Heng also handed out daily essentials to over 50 poor and needy residents, while 100 needy pupils of SK Pagar Museh received schoolbags from the ministry. -- BERNAMA
