BUTTERWORTH: Teluk Air Tawar assemblywoman Datuk Jahara Hamid will not defend her seat in the coming general election.
Jahara, 61, a four-term Umno elected representative, said she would make way for a new candidate to succeed her.
"I have decided not to contest again when my term expires.
"I will leave it to the party leadership to choose my successor," the veteran assemblywoman said.
Jahara said she would help Barisan Nasional (BN) to pick the new candidate for the constituency.
She was speaking to reporters at her Hari Raya open house in Taman Robina, Teluk Air Tawar here yesterday.
Asked when she made up her mind not to contest, Jahara said the thought came halfway through her current term.
Jahara said she would spend more time with her family and also get involved in non-governmental organisation (NGO) works.
She has been active in politics since 1983, serving two terms as the Youth and Sports, Women, Family and Community Development Committee chairman.
