    Thieves break into ATM and make-off with money

    KUALA LUMPUR: Thieves broke into a bank’s automated teller machine (ATM) and made-off with an undisclosed amount of money, this morning. The theft was believed to have taken place between 2.30am and 4am.

     

    The culprits' move to break-into a second ATM at the bank’s premises in Taman Tun Dr Ismail here, early this morning, however was thwarted when fire broke out at the first ATM.
     
    The fire was believed to have been ignited by the suspects’ equipment.
     
    A passer-by who saw the flames alerted the Fire and Rescue Department, who rushed to the scene at 4am.
     
    As the fire became big, the thieves panicked and in their haste to flee, left some of their equipment at the scene.
     
    City Criminal Investigation Department chief Datuk Ku Chin Wah said that the suspects used portable oxy acetylene torch to break open the machine.
     
    “They had also spray-painted black the five closed-circuit television cameras in the room to avoid detection,” he added.
     
    There are two ATM machines and one cash deposit machine at the outlet.
     
    A worker with the bank’s security company said the ATM was topped up last on Thursday with an undisclosed amount of notes in RM 50 and RM10 denominations.
     
    It is learnt that the suspects had cut all electrical wires in the outlet connecting the alarm system and the CCTV cameras.
     
    Police are investigating the case.
