The 8.45pm incident happened in Jalan Kampung Panchor here when Awa Ali, 62, and her husband Adam Khamis, 65, was crossing the road to attend an election campaign ceramah.
Adam said they were standing on the road's middle line when they saw the motorcycle coming from Durian Tunggal direction.
"My wife asked me to cross the road quickly to avoid the motorcycle, but unfortunately, the rider headed straight towards where we were standing and rammed into us.
"The crash sent both of us flying onto the road, while the motorcyclist also fell from his bike," he said.
The father of eight, who was suffering great pain on both his legs, then gathered his strength and walked towards Awa before taking his wife on his laps.
"There was blood all over her face. She was crying of pain, and all I could do was trying to comfort her," said Adam, who is also the bilal for Kampung Panchor Mosque, when met at Alor Gajah Hospital yesterday.
Adam said both of them and the motorcyclist were sent to the hospital by public members, who were attending the ceramah.
Alor Gajah police chief Superintendent Umar Ali Saifuddin Shaharuddin said the victim succumbed to her injuries at 12.15am yesterday.
"Initial investigations found that the motorcyclist was trying to avoid from ramming into a car, which made a sudden turn into a housing area.
"The victim suffered severe injuries to her head and body, while her husband broke his left rib," he said.
Meanwhile, Barisan Nasional candidate for Durian Tunggal state seat Datuk Ab Wahab Latip said the passing of Awa, who was a committee member of Alor Gajah Wanita Umno Veterans and former Panchor Wanita Umno chief, was a great loss to the party.
He said Awa, who taught Basic Fardhu Ain Course at the Malacca Islamic Religious Department's school in Belimbing Dalam here, was among the key persons in Alor Gajah BN's election machinery.
"She was a very active member who had helped the party during past elections, especially with her advices to her juniors.
"Both Awa and her husband were also active in our 'turun padang' campaign drive. Her passing especially during the election time is definitely a great loss to us."
