Celebrities showed off their culinary skills for a good cause in MasterChef Selebriti Malaysia, writes Nur Aqidah Azizi

COOKING can be quite an experience. But, miss a step and your dish could be a disaster.

I chanced upon Astro’s new show, MasterChef Selebriti Malaysia recently and the first thing that crossed my mind was whether these celebrities could really cook. And if they did, could they impress the permanent judges — the no-nonsense Chef Johari and Chef Zubir?

I was sceptical, but surprisingly, MasterChef Selebriti Malaysia turned out to be fun to watch.

Luckily, there was plenty of entertainment to keep one glued, thanks to the celeb line-up which included singer Juliza Adlizan, comedian Farouk Hussien, Miss World Malaysia 2008 Soo Wincci, singer Tomok, Datuk Fazley Yaacob, television presenter Azwan Ali and comedian Angah of Raja Lawak.

Originally, the show had 16 celebrities, but nine had been eliminated.

The contestants, divided into the groups Red and Blue, are given a task — to prepare a dish based on the weekly theme.

The recent challenge was to prepare three types of chocolate. Blue lost to Red.

Blue team members Juliza, Farouk, Soo and Jehan Miskin succeded to the elimination round, where they prepared a curry-based dish. The contestants had to prepare their own curry powder, instead of using the ready-made ones in the markets.

Now, that was really tough.

Fortunately, guest chef Chef Amran demonstrated a step-by-step method to prepare the curry dish using various spices.

All of the contestants looked calm initially, but as the clock ticked away, they rushed to complete the task, and the strain was visible on their faces.

While the Blue team struggled with the challenge, the Red team cheered it on.

Azwan was the loudest in support of Farouk who prepared prawn curry with rice. The former even guided him on the do’s and don’ts.

Once the time was up, the many types of curry dishes were presented to the judges. From chicken to fish curry, all the dishes looked mouth-watering but some of the judges felt otherwise.

It was nice to see how these contestants were supportive of their rivals, especially when one was called up by the judges. However, someone had to be eliminated and it wasn’t Jehan’s luck to stay on in the show.

The celebrities’ participation in the show is for a good cause, with proceeds to be donated to various charity homes. Jehan managed to collect RM5,000 which will be donated to the Malaysian Aids Council.

MasterChef Selebriti Malaysia airs from Saturday to Tuesday at 9pm on Astro Ria (Astro Channel 104).

Jehan was the latest contestant to be eliminated from the show
