ntv7 and 8TV promise exciting 2014

A wide variety of entertaining shows await audiences of ntv7 and 8TV channels next year, writes Loong Wai Ting

WHEN it comes to putting great programmes on television, ntv7 and 8TV have made an impact these past few years. With a good mix of local and international programmes, viewers can only expect more goodies next year.

From ntv7’s original Bella Awards (from the popular talk show Bella) to the biannual Golden Awards, and the return of 8TV’s reality singing competitions One In A Million and Step Forward, the channels continue to reward their loyal viewers with quality entertainment (One In A Million went on a “temporary hiatus” to give way to the reality dance competition, Showdown).

“When one talks about 8TV, it’s all about showing urban Malaysian programmes that viewers have not seen anywhere else. Besides providing a platform for inspiring talent, we also opened the floor for talents behind-the-scene (the production crew). We want to create equal opportunity for both on and off camera,” said Shazalina Zainal Aznam, 8TV’s urban brand manger at a Press conference to announce the upcoming programmes from both channels.

The Feel Good channel will continue with its Bella Awards, a “first-of-its-kind” awards show in the country, a platform to honour women’s contributions to society.

Whether it’s arts, entertainment, business or the health sector, the awards show also aims to inspire women in their respective fields to be the best in what they do.

ntv7 recently made it into The Malaysia Book of Records for the largest gathering of pregnant women through its Bella Bundle Of Joy baby shower event.

ntv7 and 8TV group general manager Airin Zainul says the channel has been getting positive feedback during its on-ground activities such as the ongoing Yuan Carnival as well as across social media platforms (via Facebook and Twitter).

“We also have multiple contests for our viewers to take part in,” she says, adding that ntv7 will be celebrating its 16th anniversary next year. She highlights several achievements of the channels this year, in terms of viewership.

“8TV’s The Ultimate Song reaches out to 600,000 viewers, something we did not expect at all. We are also looking for similar success stories with Shout! Awards and Golden Awards,” she added.

ntv7 Chinese brand management group’s manager Lai Cheah Yee said  the channel is investing heavily in telemovies as well as dramas. “We are lining up six to seven local dramas (on top of Hong Kong’s TVB dramas) in genres that are not usually seen on TV.”

This year, ntv7’s anniversary drama, The Undercover, became the most watched local Chinese drama with an impressive 700,000 viewers tuning in for its 9.30pm showtime.

The Game, which took the Chinese entertainment scene by storm last year with its improvised acting concept, achieved yet another milestone with its second installment, aired this year. The two-hour reality drama achieved a 600,000 viewership when it was aired in August this year in conjunction with the Hungry Ghost Festival.

ntv7 will also feature a number of locally-produced programmes including Penang Striker (a story on football, history and love set in the 1920s), Project Earth (a charity-based magazine show that sends people around the world to help the needy), and Kids Dancing (a reality dance competition for children).

To satisfy the ever-growing fanbase for local Chinese drama, there are a number of new series. These include the action-packed crime investigation drama On The Brink, Teen Edge and The Scavenger.

Popular series Love Compulsory returns for the fourth season next year and In-Laws will return for the second season.

Viewers can expect yet another ground-breaking Chinese New Year telemovie by ntv7 next year. Titled Spring Chorus, this Lunar New Year production is a unique, heartwarming musical drama about a family of five siblings who reunite to care for their father who is suffering from Alzheimer’s.

Meanwhile, American TV series such as Once Upon A Time (Season 3), The Mentalist (Season 5), Fringe (Season 5), New Girl (Season 2), and How I Met Your Mother (Season 8) will make a return to ntv7 next year. Then there the new series including Once Upon A Time In Wonderland (a spinoff of Once Upon A Time), Blacklist, Sleepy Hollow, Witches Of East End, The Michael J. Fox Show and The Crazy Ones — an inspired workplace comedy starring award-winning actor Robin Williams and Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Fans of Chinese reality series will find more reason to rejoice as a number of familiar titles will return to ntv7, including Aunty Must Go Crazy (Season 2), Foodie Blogger (Season 2), Listen To The World (Season 2), Mandarin Battle Star (Season 5), Women’s Zone (Season 6), and All About Sports (Season 2).

Besides these highly anticipated returning titles, a new and refreshing cooking game show, Happy Little Chef, will be introduced. Featuring kids aged 7 to 10 years, this 30-minute series encourages creativity and expressiveness in children.

Adding to the spread, 8TV brings to viewers the award-winning Hollywood productions — Revenge (Year 3), Criminal Minds ( 9), NCIS LA ( Season 5), NCIS (Season 11), The Vampire Diaries (Season 5) and The Carrie Diaries (Season 2).

The new line-up of shows include Resurrection, Twisted, Mixology, Almost Human, The 100, The Tomorrow People, The Goldbergs, Friends With Better Lives and Undateable.
