Splash Fiesta is our first Mandarin water sport game show that unites fans and celebrities, writes Dennis Chua
MALAYSIA’S first Mandarin water game show carries the tagline Powerful, Colourful, Joyful and takes place in A Famosa Resort, Alor Gajah, Malacca.
The 26-episode show, to be screened on terrestrial TV at year’s end, is produced by Triomedia Sdn Bhd, the company behind popular Mandarin sitcom, 88 Kopitiam, on TV2.
Director Au Yuk Sing from Hong Kong says the RM2 million game show combines sports, entertainment and “all things Malaysian”.
He says: “Each episode lasts an hour and we’re shooting two a day. Three teams — blue, yellow and red — compete in five challenges, beginning with the easiest. Each team has three members, comprising a celebrity or two and fans.”
The first challenge, he says, is the dice challenge where the co-hosts toss a large dice and team members have to place their limbs on the numbers displayed at each toss.
The team that reaches the number six first wins.
Next comes the blindfold challenge where each team guesses the mystery that is presented to them. “It may be a zoo animal, machine or work of art. They have to use their senses of touch, smell and hearing to get their answers right.”
The third challenge involves a slingshot and a water bag. Team members have to shoot the water bag at large pictures of animals, each carrying a certain number of points. The team with the highest points wins.
In the fourth challenge, the teams stand under a giant water bucket and go through an IQ test. If they answer incorrectly, they get a drenching.
In the fifth and most challenging round, team members avoid a giant, swinging knock-out machine, go rock climbing, hop along a trail of stools, scale a large net and wall and do a flying fox across a pool.
Splash Fiesta’s co-hosts are popular 988 radio station DJ KK Wong (who acted in comedy film Lelio Popo), actress, model, singer, songwriter and television personality Cindy Chen and model-cum-actress Karena Teo. The trio, who are working together for the first time, are assisted by actresses Daphne Lau and Beauty Teoh.
For the first episode shot on July 27, celebrities who took part were actors Steve Yap, Zoey Tan, Angie Siew and Ernest Chong.
“The games format and gimmicks will be constantly improved to create surprises for viewers,” says Au.
A total of RM100,000 in prizes are up for grabs, including iPads, LCD televisions, cameras, laptops, watches, holidays packages, shopping vouchers and hampers.
“Splash Fiesta is designed for all ages. It inspires people to exercise and have fun, besides getting to know their favourite DJs, singers, models and actors,” says Au.
Wong says celebrities who have confirmed participation include actors Alvin Wong, Johnson Low, Lim Cheng Miao, Kenji Sawahi, Soo Wincci and Frederick Lee. While it’s the same challenges each week, no episode is the same as each celebrity has his or her interesting ideas to share.
Chen says: “It’s a great way for us to get close to fans and vice-versa.”
Teo says the three co-hosts do not follow a fixed script but they interact spontaneously with the participants. “We supervise and encourage each team throughout the show, and while it’s a competition, everybody is a winner,” she says.
Yap says the show may resemble popular United States game show Knock Out, it is tailor-made for Malaysian audiences.
“It’s a great avenue for fans and celebrities to work together, sharing tips on team-work, endurance, physical fitness and general knowledge.”
