THE movie has an ensemble of stars and follows five couples who experience the joys and worries of impending parenthood.
It is loosely based on the self-help book about first-time parenting by Heidi Murkoff.
According to the USA Today, the book (which was originally published in 1984) is one of the top 25 Most Influential Books.
Off all the five stories, the one about Holly (Jennifer Lopez), a freelance photographer who is unable to conceive, and her husband Alex (Rodrigo Santoro) is the most captivating. Instead of wallowing in their misfortune and blaming each other, Holly and Alex accept the inevitable and move on.
Another involves a young couple, Rosie (Anna Kendrick) and Marco (Chace Crawford). Although Rosie’s pregnancy is unplanned, the couple puts their differences aside to raise the baby.
When she eventually suffers a miscarriage, she vows to try again when she is older and ready.
The other couples are less secure about parenthood and their concerns are often depicted in comical ways. There’s Wendy (Elizabeth Banks), a breast-feeding advocate and speaker, who suffers a hormone-meltdown at one of her speeches.
Her father-in-law, Ramsey (Dennis Quaid), an ex-car racer and father-to-be with his new wife, treats his relationship with his son, Gary (Ben Falcone), as an ongoing competition. And last but not least, there is Jules (Cameron Diaz), host of a fitness show, and her husband Evan (Matthew Morrison) who are unsure about whether or not to circumcise their newborn.
There is also the “dude’s group” where the dads, with their children in tow, meet every Saturday at the park to complain about fatherhood. The group might not seem necessary to the whole feel of the movie but it helps bring in the laughter through Vic (Chris Rock), the leader of the group. Rock also delivers some scene-stealing fun.
Despite the fact that most of the star-studded cast are not parents in real life, they, nonetheless, give a convincing performance.
