SOLUTION: Johor police to post more non-Malay personnel at police stations to overcome communication problems faced by complainants

JOHOR BARU: Communication problem is one of the main reasons why the police is delayed in gathering information and solving crime involving local residents.

Johor police contingent management department head Assistant Commissioner Abdul Aziz Ahmad said that the language barrier faced by   non-Malay-speaking complainants had sometimes caused police personnel to  misinterpret  reports made.

To overcome the problem, he said, the force will be assigning  more non-Malay personnel at police stations so that the non-Malay-speaking public can lodge their reports more effectively.

“I admit that communication is a problem in areas like Gelang Patah where   there are Chinese or Indian residents who are not fluent in the Malay language.

“This  has sometimes led to the police to misinterprete their reports and which results in a   delay in taking action as the police needed time to gather more information,”  he said.

Abdul Aziz was speaking at a dialogue session with the Gelang Patah community leaders recently.

To foster ties between  the public and the police  Abdul Aziz said the police must be concerned about the public’s needs and the public, in turn, must  understand the responsibilities of the police.

“The public must  also be ready to help by giving information on crimes to the police,” he said. “All these are important for both parties to understand and help each other to reduce crime.”
