Mara will use half of govt funds to upgrade Giat Mara centres
SHAH ALAM: Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) will use half of the funds from the RM1 billion allocation for the agency to upgrade the vocational teaching facilities at its GiatMara centres.
Its chairman, Tan Sri Anuar Musa, said MARA aims to change the people's perception towards Giat Mara as a dumping ground for the unemployed and youths with no future.
"We want the people to revert to the original perception that Giat Mara is a second opportunity for academically less fortunate youths," he told reporters after the announcement of measures to empower the Bumiputera economy by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today.
Anuar said MARA would ensure that teaching facilities at Giat Mara were the latest equipment to prepare youths to be absorbed by industries and set the stage for them to become successful entrepreneurs, based on current needs.
"The remaining funds would be focused on increasing opportunities for Malay and Bumiputera students to be involved in strategic fields and increase the number of graduates with Masters and postgraduate degrees in specific courses," he said.
"For example, the courses include aviation, biotechnology, nuclear science, management, marine and oil and gas, which we have classified as strategic for the country," he said.
On the agenda to empower Bumiputeras, Anuar opined that it was timely and would serve as an inspiration to them.
"What is important now is for government agencies such as MARA to understand the message from the Prime Minister's announcement.
"We should move forward from the government's aspiration. With a capacity of RM1 billion, we would be able to generate RM2 billion," he said.
