Reality of life behind bars

ACCORDING to the Bureau Of Justice Statistics of the International Centre For Prison Studies, more than 13 million Americans are booked into jails and prisons across the country each year, putting it at the top of the annual global incarceration list.

Discovery Channel’s compelling new reality series, First Week In, is a candid, behind-the-scenes look at the lives of first-time offenders and the events leading up to their imprisonment. The prisoners are in for drug offences and domestic violence to kidnapping and attempted murder. The show will focus on a prisoner’s first seven days in jail.

First Week In follows a new set of prisoners each week and documents how they adjust to life in prison. If your idea of prison comes from Hollywood films, be prepared for a surprise.

Watch how new prisoners discover that reality is far from that depicted on the big screen. They soon discover that how they act, what they say, who they mix with and what they encounter, will determine what life will be like for the rest of their time in prison.

The six-part series also features insights from correctional officers from a legal perspective, providing viewers with a clearer understanding of court processes and day-to-day operations.

The show will reveal a prisoner’s interactions and confrontations with violent prisoners and his desperate attempts to seek bail or search for ways to be released to private and emotional moments when he reconnects with loved ones on the phone or mentally breaks down and gives up hope.

There are even inspiring moments when he makes a vow to change his life for the better. Nothing is off-limits.

For some, the path to freedom seems certain. For others, the future is bleak. Regardless of innocence or guilt, it is a harsh reality check on how precious freedom is and the price that one has to pay for committing a crime.

First Week In (Astro channel 551) premieres on Aug 24 at 7pm with new episodes every Friday. Repeats on Sundays at 8am and 2pm.
