Bigger picture


TO start a good relationship with the environment, the awareness has to start in schools. Boh Plantations has kicked off a project called Boh Forest Friends School Programme (BFF).

The project, launched recently in collaboration with WWF-Malaysia, involves secondary students from 100 national schools around the peninsula and aims to educate students on the importance of forests while raising awareness on the issue of deforestation.

Boh Plantations marketing and export head, Chen Chaw Chang, says that it is important for the brand to give back to nature, especially when the leading tea growing and manufacturing company too, is dependent on the environment.

“We want to encourage students to learn more about the conditions of our local forests and the issues related to their survival. Hopefully, the sense of responsibility to proactively play a part in sustaining its livelihood will be nurtured,” says Chen.

BFF is not its only environmental project. Prior to this, it had launched programmes focused on the orang-utan. “This time, we want to encourage students to look at the bigger picture,” says Chen.

There are two main activities in BFF — school visits and talks as well as the Boh Virtual Forest competition.

The visits to schools raise students’ awareness about deforestation and its impact on the environment. Students get tips on being a positive influence among their peers and community to do their bit for the environment.

The Boh Virtual Forest competition was a way to test students’ understanding about deforestation. The competition required them to answer two questions a day with six random bonus questions to earn “resources” for their virtual forests.

Each correct answer led them one step further to nurture a full and lush forest. After a month, the students with the healthiest virtual forest won attractive prizes for themselves and their schools.

Chen hopes that BFF will create a sense of responsibility for the environment in today’s generation
