Singer Della Ding Dang lived up to her diva status at a recent concert here, writes Loong Wai Ting
IT was a dream come true for fans of Della Ding Dang when the singer finally held her first concert here.
The recent Diva in Della Live in Malaysia concert at the Arena of Stars, Genting Highlands saw a massive turnout.
The China-born, Taiwan-based singer opened her three-hour concert with a cabaret-like show complete with elaborate costumes and mind-blowing dance choreography not usually associated with her.
But, with a promise of something new, Della turned the cold night into a fiery performance that fans will remember.
Her opening numbers Shan Guang Deng / Ping Guo Guang / Duo Ai Shao Guai, coupled with slick dance moves, got the fans all pumped up.
Her slow ballads, which she is well-known for, also won their hearts. She belted out hits such as Wo Ai Ta, Wo Shi Yi Zhi Xiao Xiao Niao and Yi Ban. Her soulful, powerful vocals lived up to her diva status.
There were times when the 30-year-old Zhejiang native stopped mid-song to bask in her fans’ attention.
At 18, the singer had run away from home to pursue a singing career.
“I ran away to do what I love — sing. After all these years, my parents have never once come to see me perform. I hope they can make it to my next stop in Shanghai,” she said, looking somewhat teary-eyed.
Della came to prominence when she blew away the judges with her rendition of Zhao Chuan’s Wo Shi Yi Zhi Xiao Xiao Niao at the popular Taiwanese singing competition, One Million Star.
“Hello, Malaysia! I am finally here! I’m happy to be onstage, standing in front of you today. I never thought you all (fans) could be this excited to see me. Thank you everyone for your support. I love you all!” She celebrated her belated birthday onstage with good friend and singer Yi Jet Qi.
Her fans stood up and gave her thunderous applause that echoed throughout the hall. Later, she invited everyone to party the night away with her.
Della thanked her fans by singing a fast tempo version of Rasa Sayang.
One of the highlights of the concert was a short but sweet duet with singer-songwriter, Yen-J.
Della was into her final song when she stopped halfway and came down from the stage to shake hands with fans.
Her unplanned move had fans surrounding her in seconds amid security personnel.
The concert came to a spectacular end with more than 24 songs presented. Fiery, energetic and possessing excellent showmanship, Della has re-defined herself as a performing artiste.
