HONG Kong’s Cantopop duo, Twins, performed at the Twins Live In Malaysia 2012, at the Arena of Stars, Genting Highlands, recently.
The duo of Charlene Choi and Gillian Chung (better known as Ah Sa and Ah Gill) first came here for a concert six years ago. Their fan base has grown over the years.
At their recent concert, thousands came from all over the country, screaming their vociferous appreciation.
The show was entertaining, despite some minor technical glitches. The duo started off with the fast-paced Wo Men De Ji Nian Ce which got the crowd on its feet. But the evening had its low notes and the duo seemed to lack the energy to sustain the audience’s interest.
The Twins’ performance dipped when the girls’ vocals left much to be desired and performed dance moves that were uninspiring and stiff.
During parts of the show, they looked a bit lost in their dance routine as well. It seemed that they hadn’t put much time into rehearsals.
At one point, Chung, the older of the duo, appeared confused and did not know where to stand for one of the dance routines. She also seemed to forget her lyrics quite often as well.
Choi, however, kept the crowd entertained with her upbeat personality and great showmanship.
During one of the costume changes, the audience was shown short clips from other popular celebrities that had upbeat messages for them. These included Andy Lau, Ekin Cheng, Niki Chow, Eric Tsang, Jackie Chan, Joey Yung and Nicholas Tse.
The Twins’ success story began in Hong Kong in 2001 when the duo was formed and released their numbers under the record label, Emperor Entertainment Group. Its fan base covers China, Singapore, Malaysia as well as Canada and the United States.
Things seemed to be going well for them until a 2008 when a scandal involving Chung and another Hong Kong artiste, Edison Chen, threatened to put the singer’s career in jeopardy. While work resumed for Choi, Chung shied away from public eye. After the scandal broke out, the duo announced a “temporary split” but in 2009, Choi announced at the 31st RTHK Top 10 Gold Songs Awards that the duo would return. In 2010, they appeared together for the first time after two years at the EEG 10th Anniversary Concert.
A highlight of the KL concert was a duet performance of the song, Si Xing Bu Gai, with duo, Boy’z (comprising Kenny Kwan and Steven Cheung), who started out around the same time as the Twins. They even greeted the audience in Bahasa Malaysia with an “Apa khabar?” and told fans “Aku cinta padamu,” which went down very well with the crowd. They also performed a fast-paced song, Ready To Go, from their new album, Ready To Go.
Despite the minor performance glitch earlier on, the Twins got back on its feet to deliver a polished performance towards the end of the show, which had the crowd asking for an encore. The Twins responded with three additional songs.
When it was time for the duo to wrap up their over-run concert, fans refused to budge from their seats. It wasn’t until an official announcement was made that crowds finally left.
