Subhadra Devan shines the spotlight on backroom boys in the arts

LAT Kampung Boy Sebuah Muzikal won two technical honours at the recent 9th Boh Cameronian ‘Technical’ Arts Awards 2012, organised by Kakiseni.

Under the musical theatre category, Lat Kampung Boy won Best Set Design and Best Sound Design. The Tall Order Productions show, staged at Istana Budaya, saw sets designed by Jia Wei-Loo while sound was by Ivan De Cruz.
The well-known Dominique Devorsine, with Fabien Wong, took home the award for Best Costume Design, Styling & Make-Up for their work on the musical Dreamgirls, directed by Joanna Bessey.

The Kakiseni technical awards, part of a total of 10 from three categories including Dance and Theatre, recognises the critical role of art and design in the performing arts scene. The award also has a cash prize, RM1,000, for each winner.
The Boh Cameronian Arts awards (Cammies), organised by Arts portal kakiseni.com, started in 2002. It took a break in 2009 before this year’s run under new management, headed by Low Ngai Yuen.

The recent technical awards event at Bandar Utama also saw the launch of the inaugural Backers Audition Kuala Lumpur 2012. This Kakiseni initiative is aimed at providing financing to practitioners and producers of performing arts shows.

It will be represented by a panel made up of members of the private sector and relevant organisations who will evaluate applicants and proposals for funding, coordinated by Kakiseni.

Low says the Backers Audition would help the development of creative content and collaboration. “It is extremely crucial that there are now strong signals from the government to the private sector that giving to the arts should be included among their contributions. This support and access from both the government and the private sector will ensure that most of the non-profit performing arts are able to concentrate and dedicate focus to their crafts.”

After the technical awards come 26 others in the main awards ceremony set for April 29. Arts lovers, fans and friends can vote online for the Kakiseni Audience Choice awards in dance, music, musical theatre and theatre performances. Closing date is April 26.
